The story
Hermitage Rd is a modern British restaurant at 20-21 Hermitage Road in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and The Good Food Guide rated it Good in 2026. The first-floor bar-restaurant serves seasonal dishes from an open kitchen, with brunches, roasts and dinner service every day of the week.
Head chef Oli Sturt leads the kitchen, and the menu names its suppliers. Maldon rock oysters, Cromer crab and Staithe Smokehouse salmon appear alongside meats cooked over the wood-fired oven, including Scottish heritage steaks and Cornish lamb chops.
One reviewed meal opened with salt-baked heritage beetroot, tossed with Old Winchester, walnuts and sherry vinegar. Korean chicken nuggets came with crispy noodles, spring onion, chilli and yuzu mayo. A Priors Hall Farm pork chop with apple and Calvados ketchup followed, and a soft floating island in crème anglaise closed the meal.
The restaurant sits in a historic ballroom with high ceilings and large windows, and it is air conditioned throughout. The wine bar pours hand-picked wines, and the cocktail list runs from classics to bespoke serves. Monthly wine tastings and private hire for smaller celebrations also take place in the wine bar.
