The story
The Alford Arms serves modern British pub food at Frithsden, HP1 3DD, near Hemel Hempstead in the United Kingdom, and the Good Food Guide rated it Good for 2026. David and Becky Salisbury have run the pub since 1999, and the kitchen works from a menu that rotates through the year.
Chargrilled Padrón peppers come from nearby Northchurch, and the strudel uses fruit from the Chiltern Heritage Orchard. The pub is landlocked, so its fish travels up from the West Country. Michelin lists the Alford Arms as Recommended for 2026.
Bubble 'n' squeak with oak-smoked bacon, a free-range poached egg and hollandaise has been on the menu since day one. Other plates rotate, such as Ashridge venison bonbons with bramble sauce or hake fillet with crushed new potatoes, buttered kale and caper sauce. Cornish crab with chilli-buttered courgette linguine is another example of the seasonal line-up.
The interiors are farmhouse-chic, with a bar that keeps tables free for walk-ins. Dogs are welcome in the bar, the dining room and on the heated terrace. If you are bringing one to the dining room, mention it when you book, because the tables there are closely spaced.
Most of the ales come from local breweries, including Tring, Rebellion and Chiltern, with Camden Town lager and IPA alongside. The wine list is built on old world bottles and offers 175ml and 250ml glasses. The gin range runs to more than 20 options.
