The story
Grassington House, at 5 The Square in Grassington, is a Modern British restaurant with rooms that holds 2 AA Rosettes for 2026. The kitchen cooks with Yorkshire meat, game and East Coast fish, and the house sits close to the cobbled square in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.
John Rudden, head chef and owner, trained at The Angel at Hetton under Dennis Watkins before winning Chef of the Year three times at the White Hart at Lydgate. The menu leans on Yorkshire meat and game, from well-aged steaks with triple-cooked chips to beef mignon with a traditional suet rag pudding. East Coast fish appears too, such as cod with scallop and tiger prawn thermidor. On Sundays, a 14-hour slow-cooked rump of beef takes centre stage.
The main service happens in the elegant biscuit-brown dining room, with a newer private dining pod alongside it. The bar and terrace offer a lighter menu, and the terrace looks over the square for lunch, coffee or an evening drink. The Good Food Guide calls it more of a restaurant with rooms than a hotel, and its bistro-style Modern British cooking rates Good for 2026.
