The story
The Peacock Inn in Bildeston serves modern British cooking at 37 The Street, Chelsworth, IP7 7HU, and earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026 for good quality, good value cooking. The 14th century timber-framed inn sits on the north shore of the River Brett and has a bar, a restaurant and seven bedroom suites.
Head chef Sam Clover writes menus that change with the seasons, drawing on Suffolk farms, artisanal growers, sustainable fish, and free range meat and game. He started in kitchens as a teenager and trained in pastry at catering college in Colchester before working at Pied a Terre in Fitzrovia. His cooking uses traditional technique with a particular interest in fermentation. Vegetarian and vegan menus sit alongside the main carte.
Recent plates include saffron cured red mullet with spiced fish soup and homemade sriracha, and roasted guinea fowl with wye valley asparagus, truffle and reblochon. Desserts such as blood orange drizzle cake with clotted cream ice cream show the kitchen's pastry background. Sample menus change with seasonal availability.
