The story
The Duncombe Arms, at Main Road, Ellastone, DE6 2GZ near Ashbourne, is a modern British pub kitchen that holds a 2026 Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking. The inn sits on the Staffordshire and Derbyshire border and serves both village regulars and visitors heading to the Peak District.
Head Chef Scott Law forages locally and develops a kitchen garden through the year. Much of the meat comes from Dunwood Farm, a 170-acre all-grass farm where small herds of Aberdeen Angus, Hereford and Longhorn cattle graze. In autumn and winter the kitchen works with local huntsmen on game dinners, often paired with wine.
Breads, sauces, stocks and ice creams are made in-house. Puddings often include a freshly made soufflé, from praline to prune and Armagnac. Inside, the rustic-chic rooms have blazing fires, and the garden looks out across the Dove Valley.
