The story
Oma Wilma Heimatküche in Westerland, at Gurtstig 32 in Keitum on Sylt, is a North German kitchen that earned two Kochlöffel in the Schlemmer Atlas for 2026. The restaurant serves reworked home cooking in a historic thatched-roof house.
Nicolas Rathge runs the kitchen. He trained under Jörg Müller and cooked at Margaux in Berlin, aboard the MS Europa, at Sölring Hof and at Gogärtchen on Sylt. He named the restaurant after Wilma, who taught him to cook as a child. The menu blends regional produce with classic kitchen cooking and changes monthly.
The evening menu includes Tatar vom Husumer Rind (21 €), Nordsee Kabeljau (38 €) with beetroot and pearl onion, and Rinderroulade (36 €) with red cabbage cream. The Schlemmer Atlas singled out matjes herring, mussel salad and baked Frisian egg. Lunch, served until 15:30, offers Currywurst (16 €) and a "Pannfisch Style" plate. Fish comes from Denmark, game from the area around Hamburg, and most vegetables from Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein.
Guests can sit under the thatch in the Friesenhaus or outdoors in the garden under the trees. Desserts include house-made chocolate and vanilla ice cream and lemon and pear-thyme sorbets, at 4.50 € per scoop. The bar pours an Aperol Spritz (14 €) and a 20-year-old Grahams Tawny port, served by the glass.
