The story

HEIMAT in Reit im Winkl: Bavarian Cooking at Gut Steinbach

HEIMAT is the restaurant at Relais & Châteaux Gut Steinbach, Steinbachweg 10 in Reit im Winkl, where chef Achim Hack runs a Bavarian kitchen built on Chiemgau produce. The Michelin Guide lists the restaurant as Recommended for 2026.

Chef Achim Hack's cooking

Hack roots his cooking in Bavarian tradition. About 80 percent of the ingredients come from within 80 kilometers of the hotel. Top-quality cheese comes from the Tölzer Käseladen.

Dishes on the menu

Classics such as beef broth, Leberkäse, and mushrooms in herb cream sauce with dumplings sit alongside lighter plates like pumpkin orecchiette with tomatoes and Parmesan, or zander fillet with chickpea curry. Guests can order à la carte or choose one of two set menus of three to four courses: "Heimat" or the vegetarian "Boden."

Rooms and wine

Three dining rooms each carry a different mood. The Auerhahn Rooms have a tiled stove and the feel of a mountain hunting lodge. The Bayern Rooms use lighter wood, plenty of natural light, and paneling, while the Tiroler Rooms have darker wood and carvings softened by light fabrics. The wine list holds around 100 selections, 15 of them by the glass. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded three Kochlöffel for 2026 and describes the cooking as upscale, centered on game, farm chickens, and regional fish.
