The story
Gasthaus zur Kanne serves Palatine country cooking at Weinstr. 31 in Deidesheim, and the Michelin Guide listed it with a Bib Gourmand in 2026 for good quality, good value cooking. The house calls itself the oldest inn in the Palatinate and dates its history to 1160.
The Schlemmer Atlas gave the Kanne 2 Kochlöffel in 2026 and describes a beautifully, modernly renovated interior. The guest book reads like a century of German public life. Goethe is said to have mused over wine in the atrium, Helmut Kohl had a sociable corner in the Geißbockstube, and Willy Brandt once dined in the Kaminzimmer.
The kitchen works from seasonal, regional ingredients and gives local classics a lighter hand. The Palatina Trio pairs Saumagen, Bratwurst and Leberknödel with onion jus and champagne cabbage. The Saumagen Roulette offers three versions of the stuffed pork stomach: potato, sheep's cheese with chili, and chestnut. Elsewhere, the rump steak comes off the charcoal grill with hazelnut crumble, and the veal cordon bleu is filled with Comté and ham.
Vegetarians get handmade Käsespätzle in a small skillet, and there is a vegan confit carrot with beluga lentils. Desserts include Rostige Ritter with vanilla sauce and berries, and a tonka bean crème brûlée.
The Weinbar pours wines from regional estates alongside cocktails. The sparkling list features local growers such as Sekthaus Krack and Weingut Motzenbäcker. Outdoor seating is available.
