The story
Die Alte Schmelz in Neustadt an der Weinstraße serves regional German cooking at Alte Schmelz 1, and the Schlemmer Atlas awarded it 1 Kochlöffel in 2026. The family-run house pairs its restaurant with guest rooms, so the kitchen and the lodging share one building.
The menu changes with the seasons, and the kitchen works with fresh local ingredients. Pfifferling mushrooms show up in several of the current recommendations. The house describes its cooking as high-quality regional food that stays unfussy.
Flammkuchen come either in a Mediterranean version with sheep's cheese and peppers or in an Alsatian one with speck and onions. Heartier plates include Schnitzel "Wiener Art" with pommes frites, Pfälzer Spießbraten braised in Riesling and served on toasted sourdough, and a marinated Winzersteak of pork collar with herb butter. The dessert list runs from a sorbet variation to a three-scoop ice cream plate.
The restaurant covers 523 square metres and seats 280 across three areas: the Hauptsaal, the Schmelzer Stube, and a garden space with the Siegfriedhütte. Parking and Wi-Fi are free. Guests can also book Deluxe, Superior or Komfort rooms in the same house.
