The story
Das Marktrestaurant at Dekan-Karl-Platz 21 in Mittenwald holds one Michelin Star (2026) for country cooking that pairs Upper Bavarian ingredients with Lower Rhine habits. Chef and owner Andreas Hillejan cooks here, and his partner Nancy Hillejan looks after the wine.
Hillejan comes from the Rhineland, and a few dishes say so by name. Pillekuchen & Shrimp is a Rhineland-style potato pancake, reworked with shrimp and cucumber ice cream. His trout comes in a horseradish-hay-miso with burnt cream and Black Forest sausage bread. The vegetarian menu has tortellini with Jerusalem artichoke, white tomato butter and spinach. Guests choose between two menus built around seasonal, regional produce.
Nancy Hillejan, the sommelier, advises from a list of 80 wines and pours ten by the glass. Der Feinschmecker gave the restaurant 2.5 in 2026 and described relaxed enjoyment at a high standard, with very warm-hearted hosts.
The old vaulted cellar dates to the 17th century and seats about 20, which suits family dinners and private groups. In summer the courtyard terrace holds around 30 guests and looks toward the Karwendel mountains.
