The story
Hinterding is a classic French restaurant at Bahnhofstraße 72 in Lengerich, rated 2.5 Kochlöffel by Schlemmer Atlas in 2026 and also recommended by the Michelin Guide this year. The kitchen works in the French tradition and adds a Westphalian accent.
The couple has run the house since 2011, after almost 20 years in Wiesbaden. Klaus Weingartz cooks what he calls cuisine naturelle, built on craft and unprocessed ingredients. Elke Zeitner greets guests, works the floor and makes the desserts as pâtissière.
The menu changes every Thursday. A recent card listed grilled gambas on Jerusalem artichoke cream with truffled Brussels sprout salad, and crisp-roasted imperial quail with green asparagus and orange. Mains included veal saddle with morel sauce and hand-scraped spätzle, and saltmeadow lamb with gratin dauphinoise. Brie de Meaux filled with truffle appears among the desserts. Three- and four-course menus are offered, each with an optional wine pairing.
The Art Nouveau villa dates from 1904. Its salons and rooms are furnished with antiques. The wine list reaches from the Rheingau and Nahe to Mallorca and Stellenbosch, with a Grüner Veltliner from Kamptal set apart as the house's own "WeinDing".
