The story
Farmerhaus, at Am Farmerhaus 1 in Groß-Umstadt, runs an African kitchen that the Michelin Guide listed as Recommended in 2026. The restaurant sits in the Odenwald and has been run by one family for 60 years, with South African cooking at its center.
The kitchen works from South African traditions, which the restaurant describes as a blend of Indian, Southeast Asian, Dutch and French influences. Game is a regular feature, with ostrich, zebra and springbok on the menu, alongside Namibian beef. On Wednesdays the house serves "African Flavours," ten small courses that can be prepared vegetarian on request.
The terrace looks out over the Umstadt vineyards, and the interior is decorated with African objects and artwork. A private room suits events. The sister property, the Farmerhaus Lodge, lies about 1,600 meters away and offers a shuttle.
The wine list leans on South African bottles, and the Schlemmer Atlas awarded the restaurant two Kochlöffel for 2026, praising its African game specialties and varied menus. Alfred and Ursula Schodlok founded the restaurant, their son Alexander ran it for decades, and today their sons Sandro and Marlon manage it.
