The story
Der Löwe is a country inn at Dorfstraße 20, Linsengericht, in the village of Eidengesäß near the northern Spessart, and it is listed in the city of Gelnhausen. The kitchen serves country cooking built on seasonal produce, and the restaurant earned a Michelin Recommended mention for 2026.
Brigitte and Joachim Sauter run the house, and they describe the kitchen as a demanding fresh cooking style that follows the seasons. The base is good raw ingredients and classic craft, with no convenience products and no artificial additives. The house has been in operation for more than a century, and the current hosts bought the property over twenty years ago and extended it.
The starters include tuna tartare made from Yellow Fin tuna with avocado, cucumber and wasabi, and king prawns fried in panko with a lime sauce. Mains lean toward regional meat, such as filet medallions from Schwäbisch Haller landpig with cream, mushrooms and Allgäu cheese spätzle. Braised ox cheek with red wine sauce appears on the menu alongside duck breast with mango and tarragon sauce. For dessert, the warm hazelnut bake with pear ragout and Armagnac cinnamon ice cream is a seasonal favorite.
Beyond the restaurant, the property has a courtyard garden. A small parlor seats up to 15 guests for private gatherings, and the Gartensaal hall holds up to 70. The hosts describe the service as relaxed and familiar, aimed at an unhurried meal.
