The story
Restaurant Bonsmanns Hof serves Westphalian cooking at Wittbräucker Str. 38 in Herdecke, and the Schlemmer Atlas 2026 awarded it 2 Kochlöffel. The restaurant sits within a hotel and beer garden, so guests can eat in the dining rooms, on the terrace or outdoors.
Georg Echtler leads the kitchen and runs the front of house alongside the team. The cooking takes classic craft seriously but stays open to new ideas. Dishes are made fresh without convenience products, with Westphalian classics sitting next to modern interpretations. Much of the produce comes from the surrounding region, and the wine list is chosen to match the menu.
The Sauerbraten with raisin sauce, potato dumplings and butter crumbs is one of the most direct regional plates on the card. A Black Angus rump steak comes with a mustard and onion crust, potato gratin and speck beans. In the seasons, chanterelles appear in several forms, from a cream soup to a cream and herb sauce served over spätzle. Vegetarian diners will find an omelette with feta and a chickpea curry with fragrant rice.
The dining rooms include the Saal, the Jägerstube, the Gartenzimmer, the Wirtsstube and a Wintergarten, with a terrace and beer garden beyond them. The Schlemmer Atlas notes the slate-clad house sits above the Ruhrtalweg with the Sauerland nearby. The restaurant serves Wednesday to Sunday with separate lunch and dinner kitchen times, and the hotel offers 17 country-style rooms.
