The story
Landhotel Pöpsel is a Westphalian restaurant in Beckum, at Herzfelder Str. 60, 59269 Beckum. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded it 1,5 Kochlöffel in 2026, describing a beer garden and hotel at the edge of the forest in the Beckum Hills, a good stop for cyclists.
The kitchen works with seasonal produce from the Münsterland, prepared by hand from house recipes refined over many years. The menu starts with a clear beef broth served with semolina and marrow dumplings, and includes a vegan Provençal tomato soup. Asparagus appears on the menu in May, and the braised Sauerbraten is a long-standing favourite.
The Holzfällerplatte, or lumberjack's platter, combines a small beef steak, pork fillet and loin, a herb-butter schnitzel, several salads and fries. The Bierkutscher brings two fried meatballs with braised onions, bratkartoffeln and a gherkin. Dessert leans classic: Herrencreme, a vanilla pudding folded with cream and a measure of rum, or vanilla ice cream with hot cherries.
On warm evenings the beer garden fills under its old trees, pouring draft beer and cold drinks alongside hearty classics. Live music runs in summer, and in winter the grounds host a Christmas village and the Eisstock lanes. The house also hosts weddings, birthdays and company parties in rooms for 10 to 120 guests, and offers accommodation with wheelchair access.
